Let’s Have A Say In What Our Neighborhood Looks Like!
Woodcroft Community will be undergoing reconstruction by the City of Edmonton beginning in 2011. This will include replacing old sidewalks, street lights, sewer pipes and resurfacing roads. The Community League has already held two information meetings regarding our neighborhood’s reconstruction and will be hosting another one in the fall.
During the reconstruction we have the opportunity to have decorative street lights installed throughout our community. The details are outlined in this brochure. Information Brochure and Survey Form
We have 4 design options to choose from:
If we, as a community, choose either of options 2, 3, or 4 we will only have to pay the difference in price between the cost of a standard galvanized light and the decorative light fixture that we have chosen.
Please fill in the brochure to let the Community League know which design option you would like to see in your neighborhood!
We will then let the City know which of the street light options our residents have chosen. The City can then obtain more accurate price estimates based on current materials and labor costs and other industry factors.
Please note that filling in your choice of street light option on the brochure is not the “final vote” on the matter. Community League representatives will be canvassing door-to-door to gather signatures in support of decorative lights after we have done this poll.
Please return your completed brochure (can be mailed or simply dropped into the mail box) to:

Woodcroft Neighbourhood Reconstruction
On May 21, 2009 we had the City’s Transportation Dept. out to discuss with about 20 residents our upcoming Community Rehabilitation Project which will be taking place in 2011/2012. I found out that what Woodcroft will be undergoing at that time is actually a community reconstruction rather than a rehabilitation. A rehabilitation is merely the repaving of roads whereas a reconstruction is the complete replacement of sewer pipes, lights standards, roads and sidewalks. The Transportation Dept. came out so soon to discuss this project so that residents are better informed of the changes that will be taking place outside their front doors, reducing the number of surprises. Some important information I can share with you from the meeting is:
· The reconstruction does not include alleys at this time. The Transportation Dept. is however attempting to find ways to fund the reconstruction of alleys in a separate effort to update the infrastructure of older neighbourhoods
· Total cost of the reconstruction of Woodcroft will be around $20 million.
· Sidewalk costs include removal of old, installation of gravel base, reinforced steel, concrete and landscaping. Residents are responsible for 50% of cost in replacing their sidewalk. Current rates are $155/meter with the average sidewalk costing $2,360.00. Residents can pay for the sidewalk replacement over 20 years on their taxes or pay it all at once. Those residents living on a corner lot pay 50% of the cost for one side and only 15% of the cost of the other side.
· The reconstruction usually takes place during the summer months to reduce the inconvenience of road closures during busier times of the year.
· The community is divided into sections for the reconstruction. If a group of residents in a section wish, they can petition against having their sidewalks replaced. If however, the residents change their minds after 2012 and wish the city to come back and replace their sidewalks, they must pay 100% of the sidewalk cost.
· The standard street light that will replace our aging ones will be 28’ galvanized poles with 100 watt lights. If there are tall trees that will block the lights, a shorter version will be installed.
· If we as a community wish, we can express an interest in special decorative lighting. Residents will be responsible for paying the additional cost of the more expensive decorative lighting however.
· Roads will be narrowed to reduce the crossing distance for pedestrians at key intersections such as at 139 St. and 115 Ave., Woodcroft Ave. and 135 St. (North of St. Mark’s) and mid-block on 139 St. across from the entrance to the playground at Woodcroft School. If residents have any other suggestions of intersections or other crossing points that could be considered, they can contact me at 454-8680 and I will pass these suggestions along to the Transporation Dept.
